Review :: Julia Cook Books

One of my favorite authors for social-emotional learning is Julia Cook. She has a book for almost every single type of behavior or situation I encounter as a school social worker and they’re great for on-the-go lesson planning when I’m scrambling to make time to plan. Best of all, my students love the books and actually pay attention while we’re reading and talking about them. What’s not to love? Here are a few of my favorites:

Do you have any favorite books for teaching social-emotional skills?

Disclaimer: I didn’t receive any compensation for reviewing these books. I just own all of them and love using them with my students! New Product :: Emotion Clip Art

Emotion Clip Art

Emotion Clip Art

I’ve recently started experimenting with making my own clipart for things. There are some social-emotional type images out there, but I felt like for emotions, they all contained happy, sad, scared, and angry and that was about it! So, I was really excited once I figured out how to make my own and now I’m sharing them 🙂 These packs include 15 different emotions + line art of 2 different ethnicities. They’re great for making your own lesson materials for sites like TeachersPayTeachers or for making activities for your own classroom! You could also just print them out and make flash cards! The emotions that are included are:

  • Angry
  • Bored
  • Content
  • Disappointed
  • Embarrassed
  • Excited
  • Happy
  • Nervous
  • Sad
  • Scared
  • Shy
  • Sick
  • Silly
  • Surprised
  • Tired

I’m hoping to make some more social skills/behavior/emotion clip art in the future. Is there anything you’d like to see?

18 Ways to Scare a Social Worker

18 Ways to Scare a Social Worker

I recently saw a hilarious post on Sublime Speech about the Spookiest Things To Do To an SLP. I figured I’d jump on the fun and make a list for school social workers as well (I did borrow a few of hers!)!

  • Blinking voicemail light to start the day
  • A move-in student with a behavior plan and social work minutes
  • “unfounded”
  • Medicaid
  • Burps, gas, and runny noses
  • “I DIDN’T TAKE MY MEDICINE TODAY!”
  • An invasion of the Unthinkables
    – A required 8-hour workshop that doesn’t offer CEUs
  • “I don’t allow _______ accommodation in my classroom.”
  • 10 calendar days or 10 school days?
  • An IEP invitation for tomorrow morning at 8:00 am
  • “My child has ADHD, and Bipolar Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, and ODD, Tourette’s, and Anxiety, and Autism. They also have bad handwriting and can’t tie their shoes.”
  • Required professional development about teaching math under Common Core
  • Changing special ed. legislation
  • SQUIRREL!!!
    – Questionable administrator discipline handlings
  • License renewal time!
  • Overdue re-evals

Anything I should add? What else scares you!?
